Whanganui District Council

District-wide heritage interpretation and audio tours

The only UNESCO City of Design in Aotearoa

Whanganui is a city with a rich bicultural history – and the only UNESCO City of Design in Aotearoa. Our challenge was to bring its past and its built heritage to life for visitors and locals alike, through self-guided interpretation. The result was Whanganui Stories, a suite of physical and digital storytelling experiences developed in a highly collaborative way with community-wide input.

Te Awa Trail - invites families to explore storytelling signs along the central city’s river walkway and go on a treasure hunt to collect river animal cards.

Downtown Tales - an audio walking tour through the city’s heritage precinct, featuring local actors, personal stories and evocative soundscapes.

Ko Pūtiki - an audio playlist about the long-standing Māori settlement in the city.

This is the latest in a series of storytelling projects we’ve developed for the district, including signage along the Whanganui River Road and at the heritage-listed Te Kāwana Mill at Matahiwi.

Whanganui Stories was developed in partnership with Whanganui Regional Museum and Dr Rāwiri Tinirau of Te Atawhai o Te Ao.
